The team consists of two incredible racers, each one beating the odds to survive near-fatal motorcycle accidents and were left with life changing disabilities. They now compete against able-bodied racers on the race circuits around the UK.
Talan Skeels-Piggins, the founder of the team, decided to challenge those who said it couldn’t be done, he has changed British motorsport forever and given hope, inspiration and motivation to thousands worldwide. In June 2012 Talan was finally awarded his full motorcycle race licence and British Motorsport experienced its first paraplegic motorcycle racer competing in an able-bodied motorcycle race. Since then, a further five paraplegics have gone on to gain their race licences and many more amputees (leg and arm) have also become licenced racers.
For the 2018 season, the Talan Racing Team is made up of Andy Houghton and Talan Skeels-Piggins (both paraplegics), along with a further four team members to assist the racers (mechanics and launch crew). The paralysed racers have to start the race from the back of the grid, no matter where they qualify, but they don't mind as they are out on the circuit and racing. Both racers have represented Great Britain in other sports and competed at various World Cup events and World Championships, Andy in Para-Rowing and Talan in Para-Alpine. Recently Andy came 4th in the World Championships, and hopes to meet selection for the 2020 Summer Paralympics. These racers know what it takes to become elite performers.
This season Andy will compete his ZX10R with BMCRC in the Powerbike class whilst Talan takes his GSXR600L1 to Europe to compete in the International Bridgestone Handy Race (the Disabled World Championships).
Since the team formed in 2015, there have been numerous top ten results from various racers and multiple podium finishes. These racers are not just making up the numbers, but are actively battling for podium places and championship points, with Andy finishing 3rd in 2017 Thunderbike Extreme (Rookie) Championship.
Throughout the 2015 season the team were followed by a film company, resulting in the feature length film documentary 'Dream The Impossible' which has enjoyed 1.9 million views worldwide and is available to watch on Amazon, ITunes, Sky and Hulu.
